EXAMPLE 11.3. A SLICE OF THE CAKE? HOW TO PRODUCE UNSATISFYING EXPLANATIONS USING TYPOLOGIES

Why do people who are members of employee share ownership schemes (ESOPs) seem to be more committed to their organisations than people who are not?

Typological explanation – it results from the quasi-mutual character of the organisation.

We doubt that you are very impressed: this explanation is banal. It just says that people have a stake, so they feel that they have a stake. Read another way, it is missing the central thing that we really wanted to explain: that is, it does not tell us what kind of difference shareholding by employees can make to commitment, even, for example, in firms where managers do not treat their shareholding-employees particularly well, or in firms that are doing badly because of market conditions, and so on.
